GoField is the world’s most comprehensive and accurate irrigation scheduling solution. It integrates a range of in-field sensors, local weather data, crop growth stage, satellite imagery and deeply researched analytics to identify exactly when the crop needs water.

The outcome is a practical, precise and reliable tool to instruct your irrigation scheduling. GoField has been developed over the past 20 years in cotton fields across Australia. It is built on the foundation of in-field experience, research collaborations and commercial application. We have worked closely with researchers, growers, agronomists and consultants.

We currently have over 250,000 hectares / 500,000 acres of cotton using our solution, the results are as compelling as they are consistent; delivering water, energy and workforce efficiencies of >10% and most importantly providing grower return on investment of 10x.

How GoField works

GoField is an advanced irrigation scheduling solution designed to transform crop cultivation. In contrast to existing solutions, such as evapotranspiration rates (ETc) forecasting and soil moisture probes, GoField goes above and beyond. It integrates these features and expands upon them to provide the most comprehensive solution available in today's market.

It begins by compiling an extensive and field-specific dataset, tailored to your agricultural needs. This dataset serves as the foundation for understanding the dynamic conditions of your soil and the performance of your crops. GoField then combines two critical sources of information: soil moisture probes and canopy temperature sensors. By integrating these insights, it offers a holistic perspective on crop conditions and the moisture content within the soil. This multifaceted approach is further enhanced through advanced modeling and analytics, which deliver key insights into ETc, crop growth stages, and growing degree calculations. All this information is then converted into an easy to understand seven day irrigation calendar that offers invaluable insights for precise irrigation scheduling.

In essence, GoField is not just a tool for monitoring and data collection; it's a powerful decision-making aid that empowers farmers with the knowledge they need to transform their crop cultivation strategies, ultimately leading to more efficient and successful agricultural practices.

Smart farming advancement

Integration of new multi-pixel thermal lens is transforming early season irrigation decision-making

This season we are excited to introduce a ground-breaking algorithm into our GoField solution that is transforming early-season canopy temperature measurements for cotton irrigation. Developed through collaboration between the Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC), CSIRO, University of Southern Queensland, and the Smarter Irrigation for Profit program, this innovative solution is now licensed to Goanna Ag.

Led by Dr. Alison McCarthy at UniSQ, the algorithm employs multiarray sensors to accurately differentiate between canopy and bare soil temperatures during the early growth stages of cotton. By eliminating the need for sensor height adjustments throughout the crop's growth cycle, cotton growers can now streamline irrigation scheduling early in the season, enhancing accuracy and simplifying the process.

This breakthrough builds upon earlier research by CSIRO and CRDC, which provided stress-time thresholds for cotton irrigation timing. The initial algorithm redefined irrigation practices within the cotton industry, improving water usage and providing valuable insights to growers. By incorporating this state-of-the-art technology into our GoField solution now offers cotton growers a comprehensive and effective solution for efficient irrigation.

This collaborative effort by CRDC, Goanna Ag, and UniSQ not only drives innovation and sustainability within the cotton industry but also contributes to the overall advancement of global agriculture. To learn more about this ground-breaking technology, read our blog post.

Independently Verified

We know that there are all sorts of claims about the benefits of new technologies and sometimes the results don’t match the hype. That’s why we rely on independent research and assessment to validate our claims.

As part of the Smarter Irrigation for Profit Phase 1 (SIP1), the CSIRO conducted on-farm trials of GoField technology in different cotton growing valleys in Australia. The overarching philosophy was to provide farmers the opportunity to use an irrigation scheduling tool that is based on real-time monitoring of a crop’s stress levels and need for water.

The overall findings were:

  • By supporting more accurate monitoring of a crop’s stress levels and need for water, GoField can increase cotton yields while reducing workforce and water costs; and

  • Incorporating GoField into irrigation management has the potential to generate an additional $152 per hectare (2.5 acres) per season without considering benefit of redeployed water.

RTI International

North Carolina based global research group, RTI International, recently published “Prospective Analysis of WaterWise” (Petrusa et al, 2021) assessing the technology in our solution and concluded that the positive impact to growers through a combination of increased production and reduced expenses is in the vicinity of 12% WUE increase and 14% Gross Profit uplift.

Meanwhile, Cotton Inc, have set an industry goal for US cotton to reduce water use by 18% over the next 10 years, and much of that saving will be achieved by increasing the uptake of data backed irrigation scheduling.

In fact, referencing the research report “Sustainability trends and natural resource use in US cotton production” (Daystar, Barnes, Hake & Kurtz, 2017), they report that growers using sensor based irrigation achieve 100lbs per acre (18kg/hectare) yield increase compared to those not using sensors.

Both these papers quantify the value of our approach and demonstrate return on investment well in excess of 10x.
